About GMPT
The Probation Service is made up of 35 Probation Trusts across England and Wales.
The Greater Manchester Probation Trust (GMPT) aims to enforce community punishments effectively, reduce re-offending, and protect the public by managing offenders in the community. At any one time we are responsible for supervising around 16,000 offenders. Each year we provide some 15,000 court reports to help judges and magistrates determine the most appropriate sentence for convicted offenders. We also supervise the completion of over 600,000 hours of community payback by offenders.
We employ around 1,300 staff in Local Delivery Units, Courts, Prisons, Approved Premises and at our Head Office. Field teams are based in 9 districts which share Local Authority boundaries - Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside, Stockport, Salford, Manchester and Trafford. Our 2011/12 budget is £47m.
GMPT covers a population of around 2.5 million people and 495 square miles within Greater Manchester, the boundaries being co-terminous with Greater Manchester Police which enables excellent co-operation and joint working between the two agencies.
The Trust comprises a chair, a Chief Executive and 10 members. Its main function is to ensure that GMPT meets the objectives of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), uses its resources effectively and delivers a service that responds to the needs of the community.
GMPT was successful in achieving Trust status in April 2009 and is one of the largest of the 35 Probation Trusts in England and Wales. Our work involves serving local people by building safer communities, cutting crime, ensuring public protection and helping to prevent people from becoming the victims of crime.
GMPT has achieved considerable success and is designated as an exceptional performer. We are also able to demonstrate a significant reduction in re-offending rates. Our performance over the last 3 years demonstrates continuous improvement, which has sustained our reputation as an organisation that can be relied on to deliver. These achievements are particularly remarkable as they have been achieved at a time of major organisational change and uncertainty. The levels of performance achieved reflect the dedication and excellence of our staff.
We aim to be at the forefront of good practice and to make a positive contribution to the development of national strategy. Our success has made us one of the top performing Trusts in England and Wales - we intend to maintain and, wherever possible, improve this performance.
